How difficult can a copy of a few directories with about 27.000 files on them be? Not difficult at all, I’d think. The old and the new machine on a 100MB network switch, the same user on both and a simple net use from the target to the source box followed by an xcopy or two. If it weren’t for the few Access denied messages I got whilst the copying was being done. I certainly am pleased I spotted them, or I’d have lost the files. A check with attrib on the pertinent directories and files on the source machine showed no problems what so ever, so why couldn’t I access my own files? I don’t know, but I solved it with Cygwin, the Unix-like environment for Windows, by using chmod 755 on directories and a chmod +r on all files. An hour later, the task is completed. I can’t imagine life without Unix tools.
