One feature of my Linksys WRT54GL router I use only seldom, is its
ability to register the changing IP address of my SOHO network with the
DynDNS.org dynamic DNS site. Too bad I couldn’t call home this evening.
Fortunately I use a second method to get at the current IP address at home,
which enabled me to get an OpenVPN session going to have a look at the
router. It turns out it has trouble with DynDNS.org, although manual
intervention at the DynDNS.org site didn’t show any problems. The
diagnostic on the router’s configuration page says: Strange server response,
are you connecting to the right server? How the
hell am I supposed to know? The target server name for the dynamic DNS is
hard-coded into the router’s firmware now, isn’t it?!? I think it is time for
me to apply my own logic to my own systems…
