I’ve plenty of time to write this; I’m sitting on the train ICE 634 in direction Berlin. The train has been forced to stop because another train ahead hit a person. In German they call that Personenschaden (damaged person) which is a euphimism for badly hurt or dead. In the course of travelling this stretch twice a week during the last eight years, it is the seventh or eighth time a suicidal person has tried killing him/herself. Throwing oneself in front of a train must be one of the worst methods to terminate life. They do go down in style, though: imagine being solely responsible for holding up several trains with a capacity of several thousand people on a cold Friday evening!
