David A. Wheeler has recently updated his paper entitled Why Open Source Software / Free Software (OSS/FS, FLOSS, or FOSS)? Look at the Numbers!, which I have scanned through once again. It is a quite detailed report that using open source or free software can be a superior approach to using proprietary software. Wheeler concludes that open source/free source

is often the most reliable software, and in many cases has the best performance.

I fully agree. Very important, and often overlooked is also the fact that

Total cost of ownership for OSS/FS is often far less than proprietary software, especially as the number of platforms increases.

The report is long, but contains excellent data and information.
